Vegan Butter Earth Balance is the bestselling brand. Aside from the water content, 98% of it is a vegetable oil blend of palm fruit, canola, soybean, flax, and olive oils. The other 2% of ingredients are salt, “natural flavor,” pea protein, sunflower lecithin, lactic acid, and annatto extract for color.
The “natural flavor” in Earth Balance butter is ambiguous. The manufacturer only says it’s derived from corn, is gluten-free, and contains no MSG or alcohol. Most likely, the butter flavoring comes from fermenting the corn. It’s non-GMO but not organic.

Easy Vegan Butter Recipe
- 8 Tbsp. almond flour
- 10 Tbsp. unsweetened cashew milk
- 1 1/2 tsp. nutritional yeast
- 1/2 – 1 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. coconut vinegar**
- 4 Tbsp. olive oil or canola oil
- 1 cup coconut oil, refined*
- US Customary – Metric
- Place almond flour, cashew milk, nutritional yeast, salt, and coconut vinegar into a blender and blend until smooth. The mixture should be completely smooth without any grainy bits.
- Pour in the refined coconut oil and olive oil then blend on full speed until velvety smooth and light. Blend the mixture for at least 2 minutes so a lot of air gets in.
- Pour the vegan butter into an old-fashioned butter mold or silicone molds. Place it in the fridge and let it set. Depending on the size of your container, it might take several hours for the butter to solidify.
- You can use this vegan butter just like you would regular butter. However, I don’t recommend using it when high temperatures are involved. This includes frying, broiling, and grilling.
- Store leftover butter in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. (The shelf-life will be shorter if using homemade almond milk. The butter will last for however long your homemade milk lasts). For longer term storage, freeze the butter in silicone ice cube trays. Once set, squeeze the butter cubes out and keep them in a sealed freezer bag for up to 3 months.
Oil-Free Vegan Butter Recipe
- 125 ml Plant Milk, unsweetened I used soy milk (about 1/2 cup)
- 100-gram Cauliflower, cooked (about 1 cup)
- 1/8 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp Coarse Celtic Sea Salt, or to taste
- 1 tsp Psyllium Husks
- Place all ingredients in a food processor or powerful blender and blend until smooth and creamy
Vegan Butter Recipe
- ½ cup / 8 tablespoons almond flour/meal if you make your own in a food processor make sure there is no skin on the almonds as otherwise, you’ll end up with little brown bits through your butter
- ½ cup + 2 tablespoons any mildly flavored unsweetened non-dairy milk but NOT soy, and not canned coconut milk, see recipe notes for suggestions
- 2 teaspoons nutritional yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
- ¼ cup / 4 tablespoons olive oil standard or extra virgin. Only use extra virgin if you don’t mind a slight taste of olive oil in the finished butter
- 240mls | 1 cup melted & room temperature refined coconut oil it must be refined NOT unrefined
- 1 generous a pinch of turmeric optional but helps make color a little more yellow
- Place ground almonds, milk, salt, nutritional yeast & vinegar into a blender and blend until smooth.
- Don’t let the blender get too warm while it’s blending or the butter can split a bit. If your blender does run a little warm then blend in short bursts and give it a break for a minute or two in between. It needs to be completely smooth with no grainy bits.
- Pour in the refined coconut oil and olive oil then blend on full speed until velvety smooth and light and airy. If you have a less powerful blender just keep going for longer.
- Pour into a container, cover and refrigerate. A glass jar with a lid is perfect. The time it takes to set will depend on how deep your container is. You are looking at at least a couple of hours although you can hurry it up by placing it in the freezer for a little while.
